Faculty of Forest Sciences
The Faculty of Forest Sciences at the University of Joensuu is a dynamic centre of higher forest education and forest science research. The students graduate with accomplished skills and understanding of sustainable management and use of forests. Approximately 80 project researchers and doctoral students carry out research in the Faculty.

The Faculty of Forest Sciences is organized in a structure without departments. The main decision making body is the Faculty Council, which has two professor members, two student members and two members representing the other personnel including senior assistants and other researchers. The dean leads the Faculty together with the vice-dean and the head of Administration Centre.

University of Joensuu has recognised forests and environment as one of its strengths and areas of expertise. The University has selected centres of expertise to promote education and research and their interaction in these chosen areas of strength and expertise. At the Faculty of Forest Sciences such centre is Centre of Excellence in Boreal Forest Ecosystem Management Research. Faculty's researchers also participate in forest related centre of expertise in social sciences (Metsä, ympäristö, yhteiskunta).
The Faculty coordinates the National Graduate School in Forest Sciences and the Future Forum on Forests in Finland.
During years 2000-2005 the Faculty held the title of Centre of Excellence awarded by the Academy of Finland in recognition of research conducted in the field of Forest Ecology and Management.
The Faculty is an active international education and research centre. The non-degree study programme Environmental Science and Forestry is especially aimed at exchange students with the teaching conducted in English. The Faculty participates in the SILVA Network, a network of forestry universities in Europe and in International Partnership for Forestry Education IPFE. In addition, the Faculty coordinates the Asia Europe Forestry Exchange Programme (ASEFOREP) and the Master of Science in European Forestry which was recently awarded the highly prestigious Erasmus Mundus MSc programme by the European Commission. The Finnish-Russian Cross-Border University CBU’s Master’s degree programme in Forestry and Environmental Engineering is coordinated at the Faculty of Forest Sciences.
